Photoshoot tips:
Preparation

preparation for photoshoot

We include a lot of advice here and it might seem overwhelming to some. Remember that this is not super important for a photoshoot. At the photoshoot we will help you, and we can fix a lot of these problems in Photoshop afterwards. So don't worry! But if you want to be a little extra nerdy (which we appreciate of course), then this page is packed with tips and advice to get the most out of your photos. See you soon at the photoshoot!

  1. Clothing

  • Receive help: It's best to get help from someone who knows what they're doing when it comes to choosing good clothes. Feel free to go shopping with our personal shopper to get the most out of the shoot.

  • Bring lots of outfits: The more outfits you can bring to a photoshoot, the better. With more options, you can get a greater variety of images.

  • Iron your clothes and remove any fluff: Before the photoshoot, go through your clothes and remove any nubs or loose threads. Some items may have stains that should be hand washed. Iron your clothes and pack them neatly.

  • Compatibility: There are several studies that show that we like those who are quite similar to ourselves the most. If we are sporty, we tend to want a partner who is sporty. If you like rebellious hip-hop girls, maybe don't dress too formal. It's important that their styles match somewhat. So dress in clothes that match what your dream partner would also wear.

  • Pattern: Another thing to consider when it comes to clothing for photography is to avoid clothing that has a lot of patterns or large logos or prints. Such elements tend to take a lot of focus away from your face and can be perceived as less aesthetically pleasing on pictures.

  • Function: Think about what kind of photos you want of yourself. For example, do you want one photo at a café, one with your dog in the park, and one where you're jogging? Bring clothes that can fit the different settings you want to have in the photos.

  • Old clothes: It's best to avoid wearing old clothes for the photoshoot. This includes clothes where the elasticity has worn out around the neck and wrists, or where there are small tears in the material or stains that you can't get rid of.

  • Colors: Preferably choose colors that others like on you, or go completely neutral in gray, black and white.

2. Shoes and accessories

  • Shoes: Shoes are one of the things that many women pay extra attention to. Here are some types of shoes that often do well in Tinder photos: Chukka boots, Chelsea boots, dress shoes, minimalist sneakers. Make sure your shoes are clean before you come to the shoot, so feel free to wash them lightly the night before!

  • Accessories: You may want to bring some cool sunglasses to hold in your hand, and a belt, watch, or bracelet. Also, bring a scarf in colder seasons. A cool bag, cap, or a blanket to sit on may be something else you may want to consider bringing.

3. Hair and skin

  • Hair: Feel free to visit the hairdresser before the shoot. Make sure any beard is trimmed or styled. There are professional beard trimmers in town. Don't forget to address your eyebrows! Pluck out any hairs that aren't where they should be.

  • Hair styling: To style your hair during the day, we recommend that you take a shower, then use a hairdryer to get your hair in the right shape. Then you can use some styling clay to get texture and finally you can finish it all off with some hairspray. This will ensure that your hair holds its perfect shape well even if you change clothes many times during the photoshoot, and even if it is windy.

  • Products: Stick to safe skin products that you have used many times before. New products can cause unexpected reactions or unfortunate breakouts. But it's not a problem if you have a pimple or two, as these can be easily removed during editing. It's best to use a good moisturizer the night before the photoshoot.

  • Food: Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits the day before the photoshoot, and the day you are photographed. Also drink plenty of water. This will show your skin at its best. Avoid alcohol. Although it is tempting to drink a little to calm your nerves, it can make your skin look red and irritated. Also avoid foods with a lot of salt, as these + a lot of water can make you look bloated and heavier than you are.

4. Avoid oil and sweat

  • How to avoid sweating: Make sure you dress appropriately for the weather so you don’t get too hot. A photo shoot involves a lot of walking and constant activity. So you may need to dress for warmer weather than you think. For your underarms, you can use a deodorant that says “antiperspirant” on the label.

  • Oily skin: If you use a moisturizer, choose one that says “oil control” or “mattifying.” Light moisturizers are usually better than thick ones. If you need sunscreen during the day, choose a light sunscreen from an Asian brand, as these are often intended for more oily skin. Remember to test the products well in advance of the photoshoot to avoid unexpected reactions. You can also bring oil-absorbing paper (“blotting paper”) to the photoshoot.

5. Recommended props

Bringing some props to use in the photos can make the photos both more interesting and realistic. In other words, it will look a little less like you were actually at a photo shoot.

  • Water bottle and coffee cup: You will probably bring a drink bottle to the photoshoot anyway because there is a lot of activity during the day. If you bring a water bottle that looks nice, you can use it in the photos too! A coffee cup can be used in many different types of photos where you are sitting on a bench, chair or similar.

  • Park props Feel free to bring some things that you would like to take to a park, such as a frisbee, a blanket, a deck of cards, a chess board, or a book. If you have a dog, you can also ask if we can adapt the photoshoot so that you can bring your dog with you.

6. Mental preparations

  • Sleep: Try to get a good night's sleep the day before your photoshoot. This can help your skin significantly, and you will have more energy for the photoshoot.

  • Make time to relax: Try to have a relatively relaxing day leading up to the photoshoot. Avoid stressful meetings or hard work close to the photoshoot.

  • Visualize success: Visualize yourself having an amazing photoshoot where you handle it really well.

  • If you're nervous: If you want to get some nervous energy out before the photoshoot, you can go for a jog or strength training before the photoshoot. You can also include some stretching or yoga. Just make sure you still have energy left over for when you're getting photographed.

7. Find some poses

  • Instagram: You can search around on Instagram to find cool pictures of men you like. You can bring these pictures to the photoshoot and show them to the photographer. This can be one way to copy poses you like. Remember that things will never be exactly the same as in the picture you bring, but it can be good inspiration and something extra to test out. You can also practice the poses at home in front of the mirror.

  • Youtube: There are many tips on how to pose like a male model on Youtube. You can search around and watch some of these videos to get a little crash course in posing for men.
